In this book Starobinski wants to explain why nineteenth-century romantics were drawn to opera. He analyses narrative genres such as myth, the bible, fairy tales, theater and novels, and other art forms such as dance, sculpture and music, that inspired the writers of the opera's libretti, and he searches for aspects that contribute to the enchantment of the public. He also shows how opera's use of narrative genres in turn influenced many important short stories, novels, and other works of art.
